A Q&A with Jack McManus

Jack McManus joined the growing One Broker Ambulance team in September 2021. We sat down with him to find out more about him and his role as a Broking Technician.

What does your role involve?

I work closely alongside Rachael Rodden, Shane Ford, Bex Kent, Julie Larter and Rob Rowley, who make up a really supportive team.

Day-to-day, I handle clients’ insurance accounts and carry out updates to policies. This includes making mid-term adjustments and adding new drivers or vehicles to a policy.

How has your knowledge of the ambulance sector developed?

I’ve learned so much!

It’s been really interesting to be exposed to the sector. I’ve discovered how many 999 calls are attended by private ambulances and the valuable role that they play in covering events. It’s been fascinating to learn about all the different jobs they do, including repatriation, events, high-dependency transfers, routine transfers, mental health transfers… Learning all about these things has been great.

What are the most rewarding parts of your role?

It’s really fascinating to get an insight into what private ambulances do. Sometimes I see our clients driving around and I have to point them out to my partner! I’ve gained lots of knowledge in a short period of time, which has been really rewarding.

I’ve also been along with Rob Rowley to client and insurer meetings, so I’ve been able to learn first-hand what they do – and take a quick peek inside their ambulances!

What sort of challenges are clients facing at the moment?

Clients are seeing lots of growth. I joined the team just as we were coming out of the pandemic, so there were very few events going on, but that has really picked up now. The current challenges with the NHS also mean that they are very busy undertaking 999 work.

Costs are increasing too, but we work really closely with our insurers and are able to negotiate for our clients.

Getting a new ambulance is also challenging for clients currently. At the moment, some are waiting up to 18 months for a brand new ambulance to be delivered to them. This is a real challenge while they’re growing so much.

What are the client benefits of working with One Broker Ambulance?

Our service and understanding makes a huge difference. I’ve learned so much and this really helps when a client calls as their queries can often be very technical.

Unlike other insurance brokers, we don’t just see their business as another type of risk. We really understand their demands and needs. Plus, having worked with lots of clients, we really have seen it all.

We also give back to the sector. We have partnered with the IAA (Independent Ambulance Association) and carry out fundraising activities for The Ambulance Staff Charity (TASC). It’s important for us to stay close to the industry.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I’m a huge West Ham fan, so I like to watch football when I can. I also love F1. Spending time with my family is important too – I have a three-year-old daughter who keeps me busy!
